ICANN65 and Engagement and Outreach

Learn Internet Governance

The ICANN65 experience was relatively a new learning and collaboration opportunity that helped me to see policy process from a different angle. The whole aspect of policy forum was not only to engage with the community in various level and getting consensus, but it was an opportunity for me to gather more experience of how one could lead and assist the ongoing work in the community.

During this meeting, there were many moment that took me by surprise, one of  them that really motivated and inspired me was attending one of the policy session of ALAC where Jonathan Zuck said “Personalizing the issues of region or nation and make it the voice of the community is a practical approach.” The bottoms up approach highlighted the importance of the community level engagement at grassroots level and focused on individuals which shows the work being done at lower level.  Moving on attending the policy forum and meeting new people was always fun. Fighting your assumption and accepting a uniform value certainly helps to open to a broader mentality of seeing the bottom up approach with a difference.

On the First day of the Ethos Awards, I was sitting on the side of the room, enjoying the music and drink. Suddenly, I say few youths, a group of 4 student of Rabat University. I was just standing and was observing them when suddenly I was push towards them by the crowd. I introduced myself as an ICANN Fellow and they also welcomed with in their group. As I am a person working with youth leaders, engagement and collaboration, I questioned them about the meeting and what their experience were? At first, like any other teenagers, they were shy and reluctant but when I started the conversation about what ICANN multistakeholder model is and how they can engage in the multistakeholder environment, they were very comfortable. One by one the questions came in.  Then I rephrased the statement of Jonathan Zuck that really helped me simplifying what policy process is and who is being targeted? The interaction then grew and one at a time and suddenly I was surrounded by 7 or 8 students with brilliant simles and their questions. The questions were simple and easy which I could identify with the overall hesitation of what one encounters during the first meeting new people and an unknown community that calls itself multistakeholder. The simple talks turned into dialogue and then I could tell and direct them towards how they could engage their curiosity and interest to form an action. It was simple for me as I am a communication and marketing guy and my work basically engrosses me to making strategies and work with people and their nature.

They were very much interested in engaging their own communities and I advised them to do start engagement and do smart work, bringing their passion and will to a collaborate among friends and circle sharing their experiences. They agreed to contribute in every possible way of their experience of their efforts in creating a tangible action. Engaging in policy work can be easy and at times can be hard so one needs to understand and prepare oneself. They agreed to join their local ALSes and start the contribution process.

I also informed them about the fellowship program and how one could use it to collaborate creating better engagement.

I was very happy, so I send a message immediately to my Fellowship Manager Siranush Vardanyan about the interaction. She is a great facilitator who appreciates and motivates you to the comfort zone of what you can do at your best.

Simply connecting the dots, she connected me to Meghan who was managing the Next Generation program. Walla!!! I was booked for the lunch hour session with the next generation fellows of ICANN65.
The next day, I went there to their lunch session and found myself surround by an amazing group of 15 smart young people. I started my conversation with better engagement and communication techniques.
They were very engaging, and I explained the value of contribution that was part of the Policy Development Process.

Hearing my experiences, they started opening and soon I had question of how to engage in fellowship and how to create better awareness program. One after the other the question kept coming. The youths had the energy and knowledge of their local communities and the only thing they lacked was a proper way of connecting the dots. When I asked them how many of you want to engage in your local community almost all of them raised their hands. I explained them how easy it was to create the bridge between the community and the policy development process. One could just facilitate the process by commenting, doing research or bring the voice to the table in any form. The only things one must understand is one need to study and understand the values of ICANN. They were very welcoming and all of them promised to start some level of local engagement at their communities and getting back to the ICANN community.

I facilitate them with the knowledge and resource according to their interest. And I gave them the link to the ICANN newcomers toolkit and other toolkit that I had developed during my ICANN 61 san Juan Puerto Ricco.

The ICANN next generation is a great opportunity not just for visiting conference but it’s a new world of understanding the global dynamic of multistakeholderism and the community itself.

I gave them my contact details and assured them that only when we the fellows work together; we can achieve the theme of ICANN one world, one internet.
The conversation was interesting as during the first day I was sitting in an Outreach and Engagement session of ALAC and leaders were talking about effective ways of bringing the new leaders and creating better ways of communication. Knowingly or unknowingly I felt I was being part of the community bridging the Gaps.
On the last day, I felt happy that this ICANN65 meeting was a great success for me at personal level as I could communicate and collaborate with the future leaders. The importance of engagement in ICANN fellows and leaders is very important at all times at various level where we need to collaboration, communicate and construct opportunity of how we will see our future. The leaders not only represent the community, but they represent a huge part of our change on practical grounds.
